GCSE Mathematics Year 10
Welcome to the GCSE Mathematics: Year 10
Mrs P Jeshram Head of Teaching & Learning, Maths
Introduction
At ICHS, we follow the Edexcel GCSE Mathematics specification and the AQA course for Further Maths level 2. You should read and familiarise yourselves with the course content through the following specifications:
Specification: Level 1/2 GCSE (9-1) in MathematicsSpecification: Level 1/2 GCSE (9-1) in Mathematics
In Year 10, students will be divided into sets. With 180 students across 6 classes, there will be two sets: Top and Middle. The top 60 students will be placed in the Top set. Both sets will cover the same content throughout Year 10. At the end of the year, there will be an opportunity to move between sets based on performance. If you excel, you may have the chance to move to the Top set.
The AQA Further Maths teaching begins in Year 11, following the completion of all GCSE topics.
GCSE Further Mathematics – Selection Process
We offer high-achieving students the opportunity to study Level 2 GCSE Further Mathematics after the core GCSE Mathematics course. This additional qualification is designed to deepen students’ understanding of mathematical concepts, reinforce your GCSE knowledge, and provide a strong foundation for A Level Mathematics. To be considered, you must achieve Grade 7 or above in both Year 11 mock exams and demonstrate consistent engagement and independent learning in lessons. The decision on eligibility will be made after the second mock exam in year 11, and while qualifying students are encouraged to take up the opportunity, participation is optional.

Supporting Your Year 10 Child in Maths: A Parent's Guide
Year 10 is a crucial stage in your child's maths journey. As they prepare for their GCSEs, daily practice and consistent support can make a big difference. Building strong habits now helps reduce anxiety, improve recall, and boost confidence ahead of Year 11.
Why Daily Practice Matters
Just 30 minutes of maths each day helps reinforce key concepts, improve fluency, and develop problem-solving skills. It keeps maths fresh and manageable, especially when balanced with other subjects.
Using Corbett Maths 5-a-day Effectively
Corbett Maths offers daily sets of 5 questions at different levels. These are ideal for independent study and revision.
Recommended Approach:
- Start with 'Foundation Plus' 5-a-day sets – these cover essential skills and are ideal for building confidence.
- Progress to 'Higher' 5-a-day once your child is consistently scoring well and ready for more challenge.
- Encourage your child to attempt all 5 questions independently before reviewing answers.
- Use the video solutions on the Corbett Maths website to support learning and clarify misunderstandings.

Tips for Supporting at Home
- Create a quiet, distraction-free space for daily maths practice.
- Set a regular time each day for completing the 5-a-day questions.
- Celebrate effort and progress, not just correct answers.
- Encourage your child to explain their thinking to deepen understanding.
- Use mistakes as learning opportunities and praise perseverance.
Student Guide to Progress After a Maths Test
1. Reflect on Your Test
- Review your paper: Identify which questions you got right, which you got wrong, and which you were unsure about.
- Think about why: Was it a misunderstanding, a mistake, or a topic you didn’t revise?
- Write down 3 key areas you want to improve.
2. How to revise
- Don’t just repeat questions—understand the method.
- Revisit questions you got wrong in the test. Choose topics based on your test review. Use Videos & Worksheets – Corbettmaths
